The Doctor Is In: Staying Connected During COVID

Pandemic or not, we will stay connected. 

In this crazy environment and in these difficult times, when our day to day function has been so severely altered and so many disruptions are making it difficult to cope, we need to keep a modicum of normalcy and keeping busy is the way to offset anxiety and boredom. 

The most important thing you can do is maintain a routine. Don’t stay in your pajamas all day even if all you plan to do is move from couch to chair and back again. Wash up and dress every morning. If you work from home, make sure to keep your workspace clean and habitable while minimizing distractions so you can stay focused.

Keeping or even starting new hobbies is important too. If you’re a gardener, now is a great time to get your seeds started for spring. Try new recipes if you are fond of cooking. Do activities with your family and take a stroll for some fresh air in areas where you can properly maintain social distancing rules. 

Although it is important to stay connected and to keep up with the latest news, don’t be glued to your screen since this may exacerbate your anxiety. It can also cause trouble sleeping which will ultimately heighten anxiety and irritability even more. Try listening to music, meditating, or yoga to relax and unwind. And of course you can still work out from home. See if your local gym is sharing online workouts that you can do from the comfort of home. YouTube is a great place to find workouts, yoga instructors, guided meditations, and anything else you can think of. Physical activity is essential to staying healthy and relieving stress in these stressful times.
